Christmas in the Salzburg Region – Festive Season at the Hochkönig

6. November 2026

There are certain days of the year that you look forward to for weeks in advance. Days filled with leisurely breakfasts, crisp winter air, time for yourself and with others, and evenings when you’re happy to linger at the table a little longer. That’s exactly how we want to celebrate Christmas at the stieg’nhaus.

Perhaps the morning begins with a second cappuccino, leads out into the snow later on, and brings you back to the rooftop spa in the afternoon. As twilight sets in outside and the candles are lit in the restaurant, a winter day slowly gives way to a special evening.

With just six suites, Christmas at the stieg’nhaus remains intimate. There’s room for your own traditions, spontaneous ideas, and little wishes—for couples, families, friends, and solo travelers who want to enjoy these days in their own unique way and take home lasting memories.

Christmas Eve at the Stieg'nhaus in Mühlbach am Hochkönig

On December 24, the day slowly gives way to Christmas Eve. Perhaps you’ll head out into the snow one last time in the morning, or maybe you’ll spend more time enjoying breakfast or relaxing in your own suite.

As dusk falls outside, the fire ring is lit starting at 5:00 p.m. Christmas Eve begins with an aperitif; guests gather, share stories of their day, and let the special atmosphere of the evening take hold.

Later, a festively set table awaits you in the restaurant, and our kitchen will accompany the evening with a special Christmas menu. In your suite, your own little Christmas tree is ready to be decorated, along with Christmas cookies—and perhaps a moment that will give rise to a very personal tradition.

What might Christmas be like at the Stieg'nhaus?

December 25 could start with a late breakfast. A glass of sparkling wine, another cappuccino, and perhaps the decision to simply let the morning stretch out a little longer.

Then it’s time to head out. A few hours of skiing at Hochkönig, a winter hike through the snow-covered landscape, an alpaca hike, or a horse-drawn sleigh ride. If you’d like to start the day more peacefully, a yoga session might be just the right way to begin.

In the afternoon, the path leads back to the stieg’nhaus. Slip into your bathrobe, head up to the Rooftop Spa, and later back down to the restaurant, where another Christmas Eve begins with a special menu.

And perhaps December 26 will look completely different. Breakfast is served until 1:00 p.m. again, the snow glistens outside, and the day still lies ahead of you. Perhaps it will turn into a long walk, a few hours on the slopes, or simply some time in your suite with a book, a bath, and the thought of doing only what you feel like doing today.

For us, that’s exactly what makes these days so appealing: plenty of possibilities and enough time to shape them exactly as you wish.

New Year's Eve at the Hochkönig

The last day of the year is a chance to once again experience everything that makes a winter day at the Hochkönig so special. Perhaps it begins with a leisurely breakfast, followed by a trip out onto the slopes. A few hours in the snow, crisp mountain air, and taking the time to truly savor winter one last time.

In the afternoon, things quiet down. Maybe you’ll head back to the Rooftop Spa, or perhaps you’ll spend some time in your suite. A moment to reflect on the past year and look forward to what lies ahead.

In the evening, a festively set table and a special menu from our kitchen await you in the restaurant. Later, head up to the Rooftop, where at midnight the lights over Mühlbach and the fireworks light up the sky.

A glass in hand, the Hochkönig surrounding you, and that special moment between two years—a beautiful place to ring in the New Year together.

On January 1, the morning begins in a very relaxed way. Breakfast is served until 1:00 p.m., complemented by a little brunch surprise. After that, the first winter day of the new year lies wide open before you.

Our tip for a winter day at the Hochkönig

Winter Hike at the Foot of the Hochkönig

One of our favorite tips for a winter day is a trip to the Kopphütte. Getting to the starting point at the Kopphütte parking lot is easy by car or bus—the bus stop is right in front of the stieg'nhaus.

From there, the trail leads through the snow-covered winter landscape up to the Kopphütte. Crisp mountain air, snow underfoot, and stunning views at every turn make the hike itself an adventure.

Once you reach the top, there’s time for a break and something warm to drink before heading back down to the valley. If you’re in the mood for a bit more winter fun, grab a sled and toboggan back down; if you prefer a more leisurely pace, take a relaxed hike back down.

For us, that’s exactly what makes for a wonderful winter day on the Hochkönig: being out in nature, taking our time, and consciously savoring the winter. Back at the Stieg’nhaus, warmth awaits—perhaps first a bath in the suite, then the rooftop spa, and in the evening, a beautifully set table.
